Scripture is very clear that children are precious to God. Mark 10:13-16 tells us that the kingdom of God belongs to them and we are to receive Him with faith like a child. But none seems more precious to Him than those who have been orphaned.

The idea of adoption permeates scripture and even goes so far as to remind us that we are adopted into God’s family.

In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
Ephesians 1:5-7 (NIV)

And in scripture after scripture, God’s heart for the orphan spills over. One of my favorites is found in Psalms 68:5-6a.

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families.

But, today there are more than 143 million orphans worldwide.

In honesty, that statistic completely overwhelms me. Yet, as I hear stories from FEBC Russia, and other field offices that regularly minister to street children and orphans, I take comfort in knowing that there are saints devoting their lives to providing hope and encouragement for these forgotten children.

One of my favorite letters we’ve received at FEBC is from a sweet child in Russia:

I live in an orphanage because I have no father and my mom could not take care of me because she is an alcoholic. I handle life in the orphanage, even though I often feel alone. But last Christmas I received a gift that changed everything. I was given a radio, and I began listening to FEBC. For the first time in my life I heard people talking about God. Jesus became my best friend, and I became His follower: a Christian. I am not an orphan anymore because I have a Heavenly Father! Please pray that I will serve God for the rest of my life
. –Oksana

Wow, if only every orphan could receive that message! Will you please join me in praying for these vulnerable and lost children?

Praying alongside you,

Prayer Suggestions for Orphans

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

James 1:27 (NIV)

Please pray:

1. That every orphan will come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and continue to grow in knowledge of Him.

2. That each child would see his/her value and importance as a child of God, and that He has a unique plan for them.

3. That God’s love would heal wounds of rejection, abandonment, fear and mistrust.

4. For nutrition and medical attention that he/she needs to feel well and strong.

5. That along with caregivers, each child would find spiritual mentors to come alongside them to pray for, disciple, and love them.

6. For peace and joy despite current circumstances.

7. For protection from evil and temptation.

8. That more churches will gather together to advocate on behalf of forgotten children.

9. That more godly families would be called to open their homes and their hearts to orphans.

10. That every orphan will know and believe that there is hope and a future in Christ.

This week's story comes from Indonesia. Initials are used to protect the individual's identity.

JS came from a Muslim family and was raised by his older brother since the third grade when his parents died.

JS later married a woman who taught others how to read the Koran. “The Muslim faith was all I’d ever known since I was in elementary school,” JS explained when he recently met with staff from Heartline FM. “My life was so uncertain at that time, and I became involved in many bad things, because I had no one to guide or teach me. When I was a teenager, I was in jail for 1 1/2 years. Later, when my wife and I got married, I was still a drug user. And I ruined my business because I gambled it all away.

AN EMPTY HEART

“I knew I had to find something to fill the emptiness in my heart, but I didn’t know what that was. In the beginning, I didn’t really believe in any religion. And I didn’t have a radio or TV to listen to religious programs, so I tuned into Heartline FM through my cell phone. Is there anything good on this radio station?” I wondered.

“Before long, I was tuning in every night. It was not easy for me to contact Rev. Epi (Heartline Counseling Center staff). In fact, at first I even questioned myself as to whether or not it was necessary to call Heartline. But the more I suppressed my feelings, the more eager I was to pray, so I asked Rev. Epi to pray for me and also visit me. When he came, I asked him to put his hand on my head and pray for me, my wife, and three daughters. I said to him, I really want to go to church, but I do not how.

“Before I went to church, Heartline FM gave me a radio to tune in to their spiritual programs. And Rev. Epi accompanied me to church for 1 month. After that, I became active in Sunday services and attended church programs for 4-5 years. I am still attending church today, and my family, too, serves God. Life is better with God because He is good.”

A FAMILY RESTORED

JS’s wife also testified, “I am so grateful to God because now we can attend church. Thanks to God, He restored our family. My husband had bad habits in the past, but is now reborn in Christ. Praise God!  Ever since we turned our lives over to God, everything is better.”

We also want to say thanks to God because only through Him were we able to survive. We married as unbelievers. We now know that a Christian marriage involves a man and woman promising to honor and obey God,” JS added.

Praise to God! His wondrous work of love through Heartline FM blessed JS and his family and changed their lives forever.

Susy is a 45-year-old housewife who had been a Christian until she married her husband, Dewo, a Catholic. In order to avoid conflict, she decided to worship God in his Catholic church.

In the beginning, Susy’s life was happy and normal. She and her husband have 2 children, one in high school and the other in junior high.

UPSIDE DOWN WORLD

Dewo maintained a contracting business and usually had to go out of town on several business trips, sometimes for weeks. Susy never doubted her husband because she thought he remained very busy with his job. After 8 years, however, Susy found out Dewo was having an affair with another woman.

Dewo and this other woman had a son, which complicated everything. At the other woman’s urging, Dewo asked Susy to leave. Finally, she packed up her children and rented a room nearby.

Susy was shocked by all that had happened, and felt depressed and brokenhearted.

SUSY REGAINS HER STRENGTH FROM HEARTLINE'S PROGRAMS

After Susy moved out, she was eager to return to the study of God’s Word. When she tuned in to the radio, she found Heartline FM.  Ever since, she has remained a faithful listener to their broadcasts.

Susie found courage and new hope by listening to Heartline, especially the program, Leading the Way.  For eight years, Susy was a loyal listener.

“I would like to say thank you so much to Heartline FM, especially for the Leading the Way program, which always blesses me,” Susy wrote. “It helped me gain strength to face problems that were disturbing my family. I am also asking for prayer support from servants of God who listen to the counseling programs. I feel so calm when I hear your prayers. I hope you all will keep praying for me so that I will remain strong to face problems ahead. With Heartline’s help, I can go through hard times in my life,” Susy said.

GOD'S ANSWER TO SUSY'S LONGING

By the grace of God, Heartline FM crew had a chance to visit Susy and her daughters. She was so happy to meet the radio crew. She kept saying ‘thank you’ because she found encouragement for years through the Word of God and Heartline’s prayers.

“It’s like I was reborn again and longing for the Word of God. I am trying to apply God’s Word to my life and praise God. He gave me strength to make wise decisions and always to have faith in Him. And then He helped me repent and this changed my husband’s behavior,” Susy added.

In August 2011, Susy heard from Dewo.  He had asked the other woman to return to her parents’ home, because he  wanted to reunite with Susy and his daughters.

Dewo has repented for the heartache he caused Susy and his family and he admits he only loves her. Susy is now able to walk tall, with her husband and daughters at her side.

“Thank you to Heartline FM,” Susy said, “and your program Leading the Way. I know that God is always with me and my family, and I will be strong when I face future struggles.”
