They have much in common with Mongolian people groups. Buryats are believed to have settled around Lake Baikal in modern-day Russia sometime in the 13th or 14th centuries, making them the northernmost of Mongolian peoples. Buryat people were primarily nomadic herdsman in the past, but now most have settled in cities. Buryats work in a variety of industries, from white-collar jobs in the capital city of Ulan-Ude, to blue-collar positions in mills, factories, or the coal and lumber industry. Of the entire population, only 1% are estimated to be Christian.
