Jihadist Attacks in Mozambique

More than one-half of Mozambique’s population is under the age of 19. In a country rich with resources, like gas and rubies, it’s the next generation who should be hopeful of a promising future. But decades of civil war, natural disasters, and limited access to education and healthcare have left more than 70% of Mozambicans living below the international extreme poverty line.

The vulnerability of Mozambique, especially its children, makes the country a critical area of focus for FEBC. Since 2017, we’ve been broadcasting from northeast Mozambique. In a place where so many young people are searching for identity, purpose, and belonging, the Gospel offers hope and life. Unfortunately, extremists see the same opportunity, yet use it for destruction.

How ISIS affects our work in Mozambique

For nearly a decade, ISIS-aligned jihadists have sought to destabilize the government and impose a rigid Islamic state in Mozambique. Since 2017, attacks by the insurgent group known locally as Al Shabab have displaced more than one million people. Their very name translates to “the youth,” revealing their tactic of targeting young, marginalized Mozambicans for recruitment.

Around three times a year, Al Shabab fighters strike villages and government outposts in northeast Mozambique. When this happens, FEBC’s local staff must flee into the bush until the violence settles down. Families hide for hours or days while insurgents roam the area, burning villages and attacking police and military forces. The most recent attack near the FEBC broadcasting station came in July 2025. Our local team had to hide in the wilderness until the conflict passed. Thanks to God’s provision and protection, our local team in Mozambique stayed safe and has never been physically harmed during any attack.

A message worth protecting

In northern Mozambique, mobile service is unreliable, electricity is scarce, and communities are spread far apart. These circumstances allow the radio to be one of the most trusted and accessible ways to communicate in the area. In a country where nearly 60% of the population identifies as Christian, the government recognizes the impact of FEBC’s ministry and actively works to safeguard it.

“The Mozambique Army set up camp right at our gates because they view the station and nearby Catholic school as critical assets,” shares Jurie Vermeulen, Director of FEBC South Africa. “This is God’s way of protecting the station; otherwise, it would have been destroyed long ago.”

A commitment to Mozambique

By partnering with locals, we’re able to stay close to the listener, even when communities are under threat. FEBC can deliver Scripture, encouragement, and prayer to those who are hard to reach in a volatile environment. Thank you for helping us serve Mozambique with the Gospel, the only message powerful enough to heal a nation.

Because of your partnership and support, FEBC is able to continue sharing the Gospel with people who are desperate for hope – Thank you!
