Today’s Prayer Target
From the President
October 2015 Prayer Target
James gives us a wonderful description of prayer when he says, “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). How powerful and effective? James continues with a great illustration:
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops (James 5:17-18).
The background of this incident is found in 1 Kings 17–18. Wicked King Ahab and Jezebel, his queen, had led Israel away from the Lord and into the worship of Baal. God punished the nation by holding back the rain. But three and a half years later, Israel needed rain. So, on Mt. Carmel, Elijah kept praying for rain until finally his servant reported seeing “a cloud the size of a man’s hand.”
How long do we pray for something? Simply said, “until.” We pray until we get an answer. As James says, “Tremendous power is made available through a good man’s earnest prayer.” Thank you for praying with us until all have heard the saving message of Jesus Christ.
With a thankful heart,
