 DON PIPER, FORMER PASTOR, SPEAKER, AND AUTHOR of 90 Minutes in Heaven will officially join the Board of Directors of FEBC in November, 2005. While Don has spent the majority of his career as a pastor, he most recently turned to writing, to share his extraordinary experience in heaven.
In 1989 Rev. Piper’s car was struck at high speeds by an 18-wheeler as they both navigated an old steel bridge spanning a river in Texas. The impact of the crash was estimated to be 110 mph, and Don, who was driving a small sedan, was killed instantly. Some 90 minutes later, when a Baptist preacher stopped to pray for him, Don was miraculously revived. During the interval between his death and the pastor’s prayer, he had the remarkable privilege of experiencing a magnificent glimpse of heaven, and he describes this dramatic event in his best-selling book 90 Minutes in Heaven (Revell, 2004). The book has had a huge impact on both Christians and nonbelievers alike around the world. In addition to the English version, 90 Minutes in Heaven has also been published in Korean, Chinese, Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish, and Nigerian. Numerous conversions have occurred as a result of Don’s book and speaking engagements. Others are enormously encouraged by Don’s triumph over tragedy. “Though I’ve pastored several churches, this book has allowed me the opportunity to minister to people in a way not previously possible,” Don recently explained. Sunk in depression while he lay in a hospital bed for 13 months, grappling with the excruciating pain of 34 surgeries and injuries too numerous to mention, Don wondered why God would not let him stay in heaven, a “glorious place with deliriously incredible music that still rings in my ears.” He later discovered that God wanted him to use his experience to minister to others. In addition to his worldwide speaking engagements, Don is also working on two companion pieces to his acclaimed account of heaven’s glory. Earlier in his career, Don Piper also worked in broadcasting, and is well acquainted with the radio business. We are grateful for his commitment to FEBC and his interest in serving as a Board Member.
