The Box that Can Talk

“PORTABLE MISSIONARIES” WAS A TERM coined in the early 1950s when staff members from FEBC Philippines designed and constructed transistor radios for the purpose of giving them to people in remote areas. The “box that can talk” brought them the Good News in their own language. PM radios continue to be an effective means of sharing the gospel with people who live in restricted access countries or those unable to attend a local church.

Through your support lives have been changed: “I used to be inconsistent in my prayer life, but now that I listen to your program on the PM radio, I do not neglect to pray anymore. Even my husband, who is not a believer, takes the initiative in turning the radio on. His awareness of God is growing.” (Evelyn)

Another FEBC listener attends church, but his wife is a Muslim. He’s afraid to directly share the Word of God with her, but now that he has a PM radio she can hear the message of salvation for herself. The burden of how to share Christ with his wife is lifted, and he prays that her heart will be softened by the truth she hears.

In an on-going effort to reach more people, FEBC Philippines staff delivered 68 PMs to the Correctional Institute for Women in August 2004. The inmates have become avid listeners of station DZAS, and they conscientiously keep a stock of batteries on hand for their radios.

On December 18, 2004, FEBC Philippines, along with Prayer Life Seminar Ministries, will distribute 100 PM radios to inmates at the National Penitentiary. While it’s not always possible to provide food and medical assistance to people in need, the hope and salvation offered to them through Christian programming can be a gift that holds eternal value.
