Chinese Listeners Find Joy

EDDIE LO, FEBC’S U.S. DIRECTOR of Chinese Ministries, recently traveled to China, to visit listeners in both large metropolitan areas and isolated villages.

In one city he attended a house church service, where a new believer asked to be baptized.

"The baptism took place in a tiny bathtub with a handful of witnesses watching from a doorway,” he explained. Afterwards, the newly baptized believer told us she was eager to return to her hometown to share Christ with her family.

"Tears of gratitude welled up in her eyes when I gave her a brand new shortwave radio, so she and her loved ones could listen to FEBC programs."

Later, Eddie visited a remote village with little more than a hundred residents. The entire trip took 15 hours: the first 3 on a highway, with the remaining 12 on winding, unpaved roads. Visits from traveling preachers are a rare occurrence!

Eddie shared, "I was astounded to discover that FEBC’s programs can be heard very clearly! This is why our broadcasts are so crucial. They can reach those living in the most isolated parts of the world.”

China’s Spiritual Hunger

A former businessman, Eddie had traveled to China numerous times, but now he’s now more aware of the spiritual emptiness of the people.

“Although city folks and villagers seem to live in two different worlds, they have one thing in common…they’re lost. They don’t see beyond their earthly needs and desires, and desperately try to satisfy spiritual hunger with material things. I was reminded of Matthew 9:36, where Jesus saw the multitude and was moved with compassion, because they were like lost sheep without a shepherd.

Many in China simply don’t know where to turn for direction and hope. More than ever, their spiritual confusion underscores the importance of FEBC’s ministry…which has been transforming lives for 60 years…through God’s grace.

Individuals Touched by FEBC

In spite of the Communist government’s promotion of atheism and the relentless persecution of believers, amazing strides have been made since FEBC first broadcast into China in 1949. This is repeatedly confirmed by stories of changed lives we receive from our Chinese listeners. In 2005, FEBC received over 41,000 responses, such as these:

"My struggle with lung cancer included painful surgery and weeks of chemotherapy," Mai* wrote. “During this time, my husband deserted me. In the midst of this suffering, I found joy through FEBC’s Liang-You broadcasts. It was so good to have your gospel programs to turn to. The tender voice of the broadcaster reminded me of God’s love; it brought me such comfort. His words were like living water, gathering me up and giving me hope.”

“I’m old and cannot read," explained Chen,* "but I’ve listened to FEBC programs for over 40 years. Christian broadcasts were my one beacon of hope during the dark days of persecution. Later, when I became sick, I tuned into every FEBC program. Gospel broadcasts have become my daily portion, and every broadcaster my closest friend.
