Agricultural Program Helps Farmers

Tuesday April 28th, 2009
FARMERS TUNING INTO WEEKLY AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMS aired by Family FM (FEBCambodia) tell us that the For You, For Me program is transforming their productivity.

"In the past I tried to raise just five chickens, but I failed," says Lack Klee, a community leader in Kampong Cham province. "Now I'm raising 50 chickens – because I listen to the radio."

Shared Expertise

Family FM broadcasts For You, For Me in partnership with the international agricultural development organisation CEDAC, which provides some funding and its own expert input to the programs.

Mr Yang Saing Koma, President of CEDAC in Cambodia, sees radio as a valuable tool in helping to educate the farming community. "The majority of people in Cambodia have access to radio... and there is very low literacy rate in the countryside, so I think radio is a good means to reach the farmers."

Mr Koma believes For You, For Me is effective because it's interactive. "We invite farmers to speak on the air, and other farmers have the opportunity to call in. This may be the only program in Cambodia that features a farmer-to -farmer discussion through radio."

Runaway Frogs

Farmer Ruos Mao told us how advice from other farmers on the program had solved his problems in raising frogs. "Some frogs repeatedly escaped... then I listened to the program and some farmers said to build a cement wall 0.5 m high. I took their advice and it was successful!"

The topics featured in For You, For Me reflect CEDAC's mission to help farmers and farming communities through methods that protect the environment.

A recent topic was natural fertilizer. Some Cambodian farmers have reportedly forfeited their health and even their lives through wrong use of chemical products - sometimes because they could not read the instructions on products imported from neighbouring countries.

Remember the Creator

For You, For Me also talks about the Creator of the natural world and its resources. Each week the program includes a biblical quotation on a topic such as sowing and reaping. This creates opportunities for addressing spiritual matters, and Christian farmers sometimes phone in and share their testimony.
